Longtime Canadian Liberal figure Chrystia Freeland has announced that she will step down as a Member of Parliament in the coming weeks after accepting a new international role advising Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Freeland shared the news through social media, confirming that she has agreed to serve as an unpaid economic adviser to the Ukrainian president. She described Ukraine as being at the center of the global struggle for democracy and said she was honored to contribute to the country’s efforts during a critical time.

A New Chapter in Freeland’s Career

Freeland, who served as Canada’s deputy prime minister from 2019 to 2024, has been one of the most outspoken supporters of Ukraine since Russia launched its full-scale invasion. With deep Ukrainian ancestry, her connection to the country has long shaped her foreign policy stance.

In her statement, Freeland thanked the residents of Toronto’s University–Rosedale riding, which she has represented for the past decade. She expressed gratitude for their continued trust and support throughout her parliamentary career.

Once her resignation is finalized, it will trigger a byelection in the riding, which is widely considered a safe seat for the Liberal Party.

Zelenskyy Welcomes Freeland’s Support

President Zelenskyy confirmed Freeland’s appointment, emphasizing the importance of strengthening Ukraine’s internal resilience. He noted that economic stability is essential both for post-war recovery and for sustaining the country’s defense if the conflict continues longer than expected.

According to sources familiar with the matter, Zelenskyy personally asked Freeland to take on the advisory role during her visit to Ukraine in late December. She later informed Prime Minister Mark Carney of the request, framing the position as a continuation of her long-standing work supporting Ukraine.

Continued Commitment to Ukraine

Earlier, in September 2025, Freeland announced she would leave the federal cabinet and not seek re-election. On the same day, Prime Minister Carney named her Canada’s special representative for the reconstruction of Ukraine, further underlining her ongoing involvement in the country’s recovery efforts.

Her decision to step away from Parliament now signals a full transition from domestic politics to an international advisory role focused on economic recovery and democratic resilience.
